Our Man in Spain

Halloween

I would like, if I may, to take you on a strange journey... Tuesday night, as you know, was Hallowe'en, a festival not especially celebrated in Spain. However there is a certain club in the centre of Valencia named Venial Club, which was host on said eve to the Rocky Horror Party Show. This was advertised as "the most terrifyingly entertaining night of your life", and much Rocky-related derring-do was promised. To this end our two protagonists set forth in costume - one a wonderful sight as Magenta, in her French maid outfit complete with fishnet tights and roller skates (!), and the other in the role of Brad, dressed in pants, socks, dressing gown, slippers and thick-framed black glasses. On a night out... it was a night out they were to remember for a very long time.

The night began well, as Brad and Magenta arrived at the club from a birthday party. The normal entry price is 1500 pesetas (about £6) but Brad announced to the ticket man that there was a discount for people in costume. This appeared to be true after all as they were let in for free. Envigored by this success, the two of them took to the podium and danced ourselves silly above and in full view of the entire bar. It may be of little surprise that Brad's dressing gown quickly became more of a hindrance than an accessory and was gleefully swung around his head and discarded. Not only was Venial Club treated to his almost-naked gyrations, but said gyrations took the form of the Prostitute Dance so beloved of the female chorus in "Oklahoma!".

Oh yes.

Enter two men dresses as witches on the stage, who announced that the costume contest was about to begin. Apparently entrants had all signed their name on the roster on the bar, but this was little object to Brad and Magenta, who surreptitiously joined the costumed crowd awaiting their turn on the catwalk. After the seventeenth entry one of the witches began to bring the contest to a close, but was interrupted by Brad's waving and shouting, as he demanded entry to the competition. The witches were obviously good witches, despite their rather fearsome appearance, and granted the wishes of Brad and his roller-skating friend. We must assume this was because Brad was so forceful... so... Manly. They took a turn around the stage to uproarious acclaim, much of it coming from the crowd which had gathered around the podium earlier.

While the judging of the competition took place, the waiting public were treated to a Floor Show, featuring many of the numbers from the film though it sorely missed "Damnit, Janet". Frank and Janet were both very good, and Magenta decided to keep her (large, hand- held) microphone in her cleavage. Said cleavage was ample, to say the least, and this practical use thereof is to be applauded. Needless to say the show was performed in Spanish, which added an even more bizarre air to the work than is usual.

The Floor Show having come to a tragic end, the witches returned to announce the results of the costume competition. Brad and Magenta were still singing "Science Fiction: Double Feature" joyously at the corner of the catwalk and so it took them a moment or two to realise that they had in fact won one of the 4 prizes! They took to the stage to deafening applause and claimed their 25,000 pesetas (£100). Enlivened anew they returned to the dance floor and remained there until 7:30am, when the balance finally tipped in favour of Brad going to bed to sleep instead of pursuing the (albeit very attractive) Spanish vampire with whom he had been dancing. You must be awfully proud of him.

Go to the next exciting adventure.
